How to Calculate Your One-Rep Max (1RM)

If you lift weights, your one-rep max is one of the most useful numbers you can know. It tells you where your strength stands and lets you program your training precisely. The good news: you don’t have to risk a true max attempt to find it.

What a one-rep max is

Why you shouldn’t always test it directly

You could find your 1RM by loading the bar heavier and heavier until you can only manage one rep. But a true maximal attempt carries real injury risk, especially without a spotter or solid technique, and it’s taxing to recover from.

How the estimate works

The most widely used method is the Epley formula:

1RM ≈ weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)
