If you lift weights, your one-rep max is one of the most useful numbers you can know. It tells you where your strength stands and lets you program your training precisely. The good news: you don’t have to risk a true max attempt to find it.
What a one-rep max is
Your one-rep max, or 1RM, is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single clean repetition of an exercise. It’s the standard benchmark for strength: when someone asks “what do you bench?”, they usually mean your 1RM.
Beyond bragging rights, it’s genuinely useful, because most structured strength programs set their loads relative to it.
Why you shouldn’t always test it directly
You could find your 1RM by loading the bar heavier and heavier until you can only manage one rep. But a true maximal attempt carries real injury risk, especially without a spotter or solid technique, and it’s taxing to recover from.
That’s why estimating is so popular. You take a set you can already do for several reps and use a formula to project what your single-rep max would be.
How the estimate works
The most widely used method is the Epley formula:
1RM ≈ weight × (1 + reps ÷ 30)

The estimate is most reliable at lower rep counts, around 10 reps or fewer. The further you go beyond that, the more the projection drifts, because very high-rep sets depend heavily on endurance rather than pure strength.
Use a challenging but clean set. For the best estimate, pick a set of around 3 to 8 reps where the last rep was tough but your form held. Junk reps with poor technique throw the number off.
Training with percentages
Here’s where your 1RM earns its keep. Strength programs commonly prescribe work as a percentage of your 1RM, because it scales the load to your current strength.

Knowing your 1RM turns “do 5 reps at 80 percent” into an actual number on the bar.
Don’t forget recovery
Strength is built between sessions, not just during them, and that needs adequate protein and rest. Lifting heavy without fuelling and recovering properly is a fast route to a plateau.
