What is BMR?
Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the energy your body uses at complete rest, just to keep you alive: breathing, circulation, cell repair, brain function. It is the largest single chunk of your daily calorie burn, usually 60 to 70 percent.

What is TDEE?
Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure is everything you burn in a day, your BMR plus all your movement: walking, fidgeting, workouts, even digesting food. It is calculated by multiplying your BMR by an activity factor:

How they relate
TDEE = BMR × activity factor. BMR is the resting foundation; TDEE builds on it by adding everything you do. That's why TDEE is always higher than BMR, from about 20% higher if you're sedentary to nearly double if you're very active.
Which should you use?
For everyday nutrition, use TDEE. It reflects the calories you actually burn, so:
- Maintain weight: eat around your TDEE
- Lose fat: eat below your TDEE (a deficit)
- Build muscle: eat slightly above your TDEE
